House of Commons - Treasury Questions

Wednesday, 20 July, 2016

During the first session of Treasury Questions since the re-shuffle, I welcomed the Chief Secretary back to his place and commend to him last year’s “Building Great Britons” report by the all-party parliamentary group for the first 1,001 critical days, which I chair.

The report revealed that the cost of getting it wrong on perinatal mental health and child neglect is some £23 billion.

I asked him whether he agreed that investing in young people at an early stage is every bit as beneficial to the economy as investing in roads and infrastructure.

There is a growing acknowledgement that those first early years of a child’s life are absolutely crucial.
