A27 Improvements

What's Happening:

A-one+, on behalf of Highways England will be carrying out the renewal of existing street lighting long the A27 Upper Brighton Road and A27 Old Shoreham Road between the traffic lights at the junction with Busticle lane and Halewick Lane to the Mash Barn Lane / Hoe Court.

The works will involve the removal of the existing street lighting including all lighting columns (75 in total), street lighting lanterns and associated electrical supplies. The new scheme will incorporate 81 new columns, new LED street lighting lanterns (incorporating a management system to remotely control and monitor the lanterns and a variable lighting system adapted to the needs of the road user) and new electrical supplies. The lighting system along the Old Shoreham Road will be up graded to a passively safe system. A passively safe system means that on impact, the columns will fold rather than fall which in the past may possibly have caused more injuries and damage.

Traffic Management

In order to carry out these works as efficiently and as safely as possible, there will be phased lane 1 and 2 closures in both directions along the A27, phased inner and outer ring roundabout closures at the A27 Manor roundabout with the A2025 and 4 way temporary traffic lights at the A27 junction with Busticle Lane and Halewick lane. Footpath closures with diversions around the works. Closure of local authority roads.

Works will be starting on the 6 November and we will be working 24/7 undertaking day working with no traffic management on the A27 and with traffic management on the A27 at night from 8pm until 6am. Traffic management during the day will be localised pedestrian management round the immediate works area, however we will be initiating minimal FULL closures to remove and install columns.

This will include working on West Sussex County Council roads and the A27 in both directions. Please see below for a list of closures.

These works will be incorporated into the main lighting works

Eastbound and Westbound closure of the main carriageway on Upper Brighton Road between Manor Road to Grand Avenue.

A standalone temporary crossing will be in operation until the new crossing is complete. A section of the footway will be closed for public and pedestrians will be re-directed.

This work will be combined with A27 Lancing street lighting scheme in order to share the traffic management and reduce impact on road users.

Diversions- clearly signed diversions will be in place during all closures utilising local routes, suitable for all types of vehicles when full closures of the carriageway are in place.

West Bound from Shoreham by-pass use the A283 and then continue onto the A259 where you will be able to continue your journey using Western Road which leads to Busticle lane and back onto the A27.

East Bound via Busticle lane into Western Road to join the A259 and then continue up the A283 where you will re-join the A27 at Shoreham.
