National Minimum Wage & Care Workers

Across the country there are vast numbers of dedicated care workers without which the care system could not survive. I admire these hardworking professionals and the positive impact they have on people's lives is immeasurable.

Paying less than the national minimum wage is illegal and I can assure you the Government takes the enforcement of the minimum wage very seriously. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) reviews every complaint that is referred by the Pay and Work Rights Helpline and always investigates any case of possible minimum wage abuse. It will also be made easier to name and shame companies within the care sector who abuse the minimum wage.

As part of HMRC's targeted enforcement activity it has made enquiries into employers in the social care sector. Where it found non-compliance with the minimum wage arrears of pay for workers have been identified and penalties for the employers have been issued.

HMRC has also collaborated with the care sector to improve understanding of compliance risks and design controls within payroll systems that prevent workers being paid below the minimum wage.
