Tim deeply concerned about Norwich Union Job Cuts
Tim has reacted with great concern to news that over 600 jobs could be lost at Norwich Unions at Worthing Headquarters. He commented:
'Norwich Union is an important employer for Worthing and the surrounding area and has been a good friend of the town over many years. However, the prospect of losing around three quarters of the jobs there due to the company's latest round of rationalisation could have a serious impact on the local economy at a time nationally when we face a looming recession. It is unfortunate that the news was rushed out due to a leak, and it is essential that all those in positions of responsibility in the town can sit down and find ways of cushioning the inevitable blow this will bring.
'It seems that Worthing is to be hit hardest of all Norwich Unions divisions and with their alternative offices in Hampshire and Southend there seems little prospect of job transfers although I note the company's insistence that they will work with employees to find alternative postings wherever possible. When Worthing lost Daewoo together with 1000 jobs some years ago the impact was immediate and the local economy was able to absorb the shock. We now have two years in which to work with the company before the full impact of the cuts become effective and together with PB and the local council I am seeking a meeting with senior management of Norwich Union to see what can be done.'
There is also growing concern about the future of the NU site which occupies a prime position on the A27 at the Grove Lodge roundabout. Offington Ward Councillor Reg Green commented:
'Norwich Union is a major employer for many of my constituents and my first concern is the very bad news this will be for them and the town. The Warren Road site is a prime location which many developers have had their eyes on over many years. The Council will be very concerned to keep this as an important site for employment and related activities rather than being concreted over as yet another housing estate with potentially catastrophic implications for the worsening congestion on the A27. I will be working closely with Tim Loughton and the Council to cushion the effects of this news in any way I can.'
