Tim opens up to Mouth Cancer
Cases of mouth cancer have shot up by a quarter over the past ten years and in the light of these figures, East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton is supporting a Cancer Research campaign to raise awareness of its symptoms.
Cancer Research say that heavy smokers and drinkers should take particular account of the list of symptoms as over 80% of mouth cancer cases are caused by tobacco and alcohol consumption. When looking for signs of mouth cancer people should be aware of:
- An ulcer or sore in the mouth or on the tongue
- A red or white patch in the mouth
- An unexplained pain in the mouth or ear
And if the changes last for longer than three weeks they should seek medical advice.
Tim commented:
"A survey by Cancer Research UK found that 29% of people asked about symptoms of the disease were unable to name any and that the percentage was even higher among smokers, who are at greater risk of developing the disease. Early detection of mouth cancer and prompt treatment can improve survival rates from around 50% to 90% and this is why it is vital that we raise people's awareness of mouth cancer symptoms.
"I urge people to read up on the possible symptoms of mouth cancer and to contact their dentist or GP if they have concerns for their health."
