Tim talks rubbish!
East Worthing & Shoreham MP Tim Loughton spent last Friday morning rolling up his sleeves and going out on the recycling round with an Adur recycling truck and its crew.
The facility is available across Adur for residents to leave out kerb side collections of glass, paper, card and plastic on a weekly basis. He was accompanied by Adur Council Director of Services.
Tim commented:
'This was a good opportunity to go out and see at first hand how successful recycling is across Adur and find out how it works from the other side of the garden gate. Certainly there was no hanging around and my crew clearly have their rounds to a fine art. It was also a fascinating insight into the differing drinking and reading habits of certain households!
What struck me was how well some streets and individual houses participate in recycling whilst others are less good. With weekly collections across the district now there really is no excuses for everyone not doing there bit. It is easy to get hold of blue boxes and there are special arrangements for people with disabilities unable to carry out the boxes to the kerb side.
Adur has an excellent record in recycling over many years and currently recycles more than a quarter of household waste. However, we will have to make rapid progress to meet ambitious Government targets and given that other districts have reached 50% in some cases, and this is not uncommon for many other European countries, there is a lot more we can and must do if we are serous about reducing waste and global warming for our planet.
This is something that every citizen can get involved in and do their bit. The Council have done their bit to promote recycling, particularly with the return to weekly collections. There are a number of things that residents can do though to make the job of the recycling crews easier and more efficient, as I learnt in the few hours I spent with them:
Tim's recycling tips;
-
remember to clean out your cartons and cans as thoroughly as possible
-
remember to get your blue boxes out early as the rounds start from 7am but try to provide some cover against heavy rain as it?s not easy dealing with soggy papers
-
remember to put your blue boxes as close to the pavement as possible not half way up the garden path
-
sort the different items as clearly as possible and avoid filling carrier bags with bottles or other items all together hidden amongst newspapers for example. Ideally if you have space for 3 boxes keep one for glass, one for plastic/cans and one for paper
