Letter to the Editor; thanking the electors of East Worthing and Shoreham
Sir,
May I through your columns take this opportunity to thank all of the electors of the East Worthing & Shoreham constituency who voted Conservative on May 5th. I am greatly honoured to be re-elected to represent my constituents for the third time, and as always I intend to put my constituency work first and be as accessible as possible to all the people of East Worthing & Shoreham, whether you voted for me or not.
In addition I am the Member of Parliament for everyone in East Worthing & Adur whether of voting age or below, and I am keen to continue my work to include as many young people as possible in local decision making. Following on from the survey responses to my latest Annual Report I will also be launching new ways of keeping in touch with local residents and giving people the opportunity to have their say at community public meetings. New consultation exercises and e-mail newsletters will be available on online through my website on www.timloughton.com and e-mail loughtont@parliament.uk I am also in the process of arranging a new series of fortnightly surgeries where appointments can be booked through my Worthing office on 01903 235168.
It was encouraging that the turnout at the General Election increased slightly though that still means that almost 40% of those eligible to vote in the East Worthing & Shoreham Constituency declined to do so. Added to the fact that the Labour Government was re-elected on less than 36% of the popular vote, an historic low, it behoves all of us involved in politics to redouble our efforts to make sure that our constituents re-engage with the political process and exercise their democratic rights. As always I welcome anyone with ideas as to how we achieve that most effectively and would encourage local residents to get involved with the work of local councils and councillors and resist the cynicism towards politicians which is too easily peddled by the national media.
Yours etc
Tim Loughton MP
